Rue Morgue Alternative Covers: Issue 57 – The Omen Retropective

on April 11, 2007 | 3 Comments

As a monthly publication, we’re faced with the challenging task of coming up with intriguing covers each and every time. I’ve always tried to take a conceptual approach to the subject matter, rather than just slapping on a press still or a generic head shot of the latest Hollywood pretty face. This ain’t Entertainment Weekly, ya dig? Here’s the first of a few looks into alternative covers.

For our retrospective on The Omen, we decided upon the creepy, iconic silhouette of Damien.
It’s instantly recognizable and the ominous red and black colour scheme plays off the posters and visual materials from the film.
The first attempt was made to look like the cover of a bible, which also seemed appropriate. The downside to it though, was the Rue Morgue logo became too small at the top due to the embossed boarders on the book and the intrusive bar code kills the concept. For better or for worse, here they are side by side.

  1. At least you have one ready for the Special Edition of that issue.

  2. FearScene says:

You definitely chose the right cover. While I like elements of the bible style one, it all just doesn’t fit together. But on the silhouette cover, everything works — even the bar code seems to fit in with the overall design.
