A Frank Discussion About Hostel: Part II

*NOTE: As Gary points out in the comments section, this links contains spoilers! (Thanks, Gary)

Here’s a discussion about Hostel: Part II I participated in for SEE magazine. I’d call it a head-to-head but Tom and I pretty much agreed on the film. The piece ended up being fairly critical of Roth, but I should say that I do quite like some of his work. I think his Thanksgiving trailer is fantastic and I picked Cabin Fever as one of my favourite movies of 2002 — not for its horror elements, mind you, but because it made me laugh harder than most comedies that year. “PANCAKES!”

If you were wondering whatever happened to bitey, kicky, flap-jack loving Dennis, here’s an update from the IMDb.

Well done, but I’ve yet to see Hostel: Part II so I think I should warn readers of the spoilers in your discussion.

I dunno about that piece. I love ya man, but that was a pretty stock critique of Roth. It might have been nice to have 2 people with opposing views.

I tend to find movies like the Hostel series, Saw, all the toetag stuff to be pretty boring and not even really horror. I don’t mind extreme violence (Cutting Moments is the best horror film of the last 10 years IMO ). But there has to be a point, and a plot to move things along. Scene after scene of torture gets numbing after awhile. It’s too easy to me. Maybe It’s a “been there done that” thing with me. I’ve been a horror nut most of my 38 years, so these flicks seem to be a rehash of stuff I’ve seen 15 years ago in Cannibal Ferox, Cannibal Holocaust, etc.
