Three Things to Start the Week Off Right
1. Nim Vind sent in a link to the latest video from the Vancouver horror punks. I love this song. You probably will too.
2. Liisa forwarded this link to a BBC audio play about Vincent Price and the-behind-the-scenes events that took during the filming of The Witchfinder General. “It was the best performance of his career, and the worst few months of his life,” says the description of the hour-long production. Apparently this will only be up for a few more days, so listen now!
3. Some food for thought. Does anyone have a clue what the hell that tribute to horror movies was at the Oscars last night? The Oscars doesn’t give a shit about horror movies, for starters, which was apparent by the fact that it had those tools from Twilight introducing the segment. Plus, there’s nothing classic in there, yet they’ve got clips of Beetlejuice, Chucky and fucking Leprechaun! It was hilarious that they had to go back as far as The Exorcist to find an example of an Oscar-winning horror film. And why wasn’t Dan O’Bannon mentioned in the R.I.P. montage? He wrote freakin’ Alien (which was in the horror movie montage)!

Well, I find it amazing that they have a tribute to Roger Corman and the only film of his in the horror montage was from the original LITTLE SHOP? Oh, and not one goddamn shot from NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD? Inexcusable! I also loved Kirsten Stewart having absolutely no interest in the John Hughes tribute. He’s the guy that first tapped the demo that is making you a millionaire, Kristen!
Apparently the Oscars only memorializes actual members of the Academy. If you aren’t a member, you get shafted (like O’Bannnon). Then again, Farah Fawcett was a member and she was shafted too.
And what was “Silence of the Lambs,” a rom com? They didn’t acknowledge that it swept the top 4 awards, but they showed Hannibal in the montage.
Hollywood makes me F***ing sick!!! I did not watch the Oscars last night. Infact I never have. But when I read the above “Food for Thought” I almost lost me Cheereos!!!
What do those douche bags from Twilight know about horror!?! Reluctant Vampires are more Drama than Horror. Why didn’t they at least get Christopher Lee??? Teenie Boppers might have recognised him from Star Wars. But nooooo. He’s old and ugly. That doesn’t make teenage girls panties wet. Reguardless that he’s been a horror veteran since the 1950′s. And Hollywood… Sheesh! In my opinion good horror films that come out of Hollywood are few and far between. Most of the best are independently produced like “Evil Dead” (1981) or “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (1974) Even the original “Friday the 13th” (1980) OR from Europe, especially Italy. And finaly… I’m sorry to hear about Dan O’Bannon. I didn’t know he died. The man who did some of the visual effects for the original “Star Wars” (1977). Wrote & Directed “Return Of The Living Dead” (1984)
Wrote “Alien” (1979) “Invaders From Mars” (1986) “Soft Landing” segment for “Heavy Metal” (1981) and “Total Recal” (1990) Poor guy didn’t get a mention!?! If he wrote and Directed “The Ring”, “Scream” or “Twilight” he would have. FUCK YOU HOLLYWOOD!!!
haha, everyone seems so outraged about the twilighters announcing the horror tribute. I couldn’t agree more that they shouldn’t have been the ones to do so considering it seems to imply that twilight is among horror when it is much more a teen romance/purity series. Regardless, we can’t fault the actors for the series… give them a chance to branch out from it once the series is dead and gone and if they still make career moves like that, then ok, maybe. Either way, I don’t think calling them tools is really going to help our cause, haha.
But, YES, that horror tribute was a little raw IMHO, but you have to remember the audience. The nod to horror may have been like a limp handshake but it was recognition none the less. I say we look at this as a positive and hope that it is a sign of good things to come… at least get horror up on that stage with the rest of them a little more. There are certain niches of horror, however, that no matter how much we hope will never get past the stuffy academy gate keepers. Oh well, their loss because I’d take our fun loving, off the wall, much LESS self serving community of horror folk any day. (a public recognition is nice though!)
I have know idea about that Horror at the Oscars thing. I just happened to pop into the living room when it was on. Very strange. I was confused and thought they had created a new category or something. lol Like that will ever happen.
Fuck the Oscars. Fuck Hollywood and Fuck Twilight!
At best , The Oscar tribute to horror was a last-minute rush job, with no thought or care as to which clips went into it. At worst , it was a pandering gesture to the horror community – ” there, that oughtta shut ‘em up!”
It’s pretty obvious that horror has no place among the minds of the academy (despite some of the ‘classic’ films that DID make the cut here )and this was a merely an afterthought. How else do you explain the segment’s intro by two of the ‘stars’ of TWITLIGHT ( as opposed to any number of horror icons with some visibility in modern pop culture)? The seemingly random choice of clips? The above mentioned shunning of Dan O’ Bannon in the “In Memoriam” clip ( ALIEN is a classic, no matter the genre…).
Disappointing, but not the least bit surprising.
