Just Desserts
Well, it’s a rare thing to see horror represented at the Oscars – not that we should care, given the amount of lame like Crash, Titanic, Forrest Gump and A Beautiful Mind that’s won Best Picture – but at least we can count on a strong showing for the bizarro Oscars, the Razzies. Nominations were announced today and the genre is represented by the following winners/losers:
Bloodrayne (six nominations)
Worst Picture, Actress: Kristanna Lokken, Supporting Actor: Ben Kingsley, Supporting Actress: Michelle Rodriguez, Director Dr. Boll and Screenplay: Guinevere Turner
Wicker Man (five nominations)
Worst Picture, Actor: Nicholas Cage, Screenplay: Neil Labute and Anthony Schaffer, Remake and Screen Couple: Nicholas Cage & His Bear Suit
Lady in the Water (four nominations)
Worst Picture, Supporting Actor: M. Night Shyamalan, Director: M. Night Shyamalan and Screenplay: M. Night Shyamalan
The Omen

Worst Prequel or Sequel
Seems, well, pretty reasonable if you’re limited to major studio releases, and I particularly appreciate the Worst Screen Couple nod for Nicholas Cage & His Bear Suit. (Watching Cage in that film is like watching a wax statute of Nicholas Cage, except a wax statue wouldn’t be nearly so stiff or look so plastic.) That said, it seems like some kind of a crime is being committed by not having When a Stranger Calls represented.
Damn, who would’ve thought Sir Ben Kingsley would be up for a Razzie? Doctor Boll, I think the world has underestimated the reach of your dark mojo.

More importantly, the Razzie for “worst fact checking” goes to this year’s Razzie press release :
“Oscar winner Nicolas Cage donning an unconvincing bear suit in the laugh-out-loud funny remake of the Australian thriller WICKER MAN”

With the exception of SCARY MOVIE 4, I’ve seen all the nominees and hands down - it has to be the WICKERMAN REMAKE. It is the supreme god awful messterpiece amidst a sea of supreme godawfulness.
