The Misfits turn 30

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the horror punk legends The Misfits. If you’ve been a long time reader of Rue Morgue, it’s no secret that most of us here at the magazine are huge fans of their music. Their influence on punk and metal is insurmountable. Personally, my introduction to the band was through Metallica’s covers of Die Die My Darling, Green Hell and Last Caress off of the Garage Days record. After hearing those covers and seeing Cliff Burton wearing Misfits t-shirts, I had to find out what they were all about. I’m glad I did, because I got the same mnemonic feeling when I watched horror movies. Their crude and campy attitude hit a chord and I became an instant fiend. There’s been endless debates on every incarnation of the band, old (with founder Glenn Danzig) or new (with republican punk Michael Graves) and even the 25th anniversary line-up featuring remaining member Jerry Only, Dez from Black Flag and Marky Ramone, but you know what? I love it all. So happy birthday to The Misfits. May there be one hundred and thirty eight more.

Damn, they kinda look like rejects from a casting session for The Lost Boys. Gotta love the late-’70s. Happy birthday, though. I hope the Crimson Ghost gets you something nice.

Happy Birthday to the Misfits, indeed. One of those “life changing” bands in my humble opinion.

And for the record, the band ended when Glenn left ;)
