Grindhouse Musings

I did an interview with the Daily Nebraskan a few days ago about the grindhouse phenomenon and the movie Grindhouse itself. If you haven’t heard enough grindhouse-this and Grindhouse-that lately, give it a read here.

Rue Morgue Alternative Covers: Issue 57 - The Omen Retropective

As a monthly publication, we’re faced with the challenging task of coming up with intriguing covers each and every time. I’ve always tried to take a conceptual approach to the subject matter, rather than just slapping on a press still or a generic head shot of the latest Hollywood pretty face. This ain’t Entertainment Weekly, [...]

More Grindhouse Fun in T.O.

If you’re in the Toronto area, you can catch some grindhouse-style double bills playing on weekends over the next six weeks. The double-dose of classic Cronenberg is cool, but I’m not sure that contemporary French horror film Haute Tension really works in the mix. Hopefully they’ve got some slightly less-on-the-radar programming on the horizon. [...]

“Are horror games redefining the genre?”

There was a piece posted on Wired yesterday titled “Are horror games redefining the genre?” The author, Colette Bennett says that she’s a fan of “WTF?” horror movies, such as Poltergeist and Event Horizon, which encourage the audience to ask “what the fuck” is in there (”that house” or “that spaceship,” etc.)? She argues that [...]

“Quentin Tarantino is a thieving piece of shit and he knows it.”

As Film Wad reports here, Quentin Tarantino is accused of stealing the idea for Grindhouse.
There’s a write-up about it on the “real Grindhouse” website, and the trailer was available there but has been “removed by user.”
You can download this version of Grindhouse for $0.99, and the filmmaker has some nasty things to say about Tarantino, [...]

The Devolution of Quentin Tarantino

This past Saturday, the Globe and Mail ran a fantastic feature on Quentin Tarantino, in which writer Rick Groen makes the case that the director is actually devolving as a filmmaker. I don’t agree with everything in the article, but I think it’s a compelling argument given the evidence presented. After seeing Death Proof, I’d [...]

Lovecraft at 20,000 Fathoms

Oddworld.com presents “10 Horrible Deep See Creatures” (not sure if that “See” is an intentional pun or not).
Maaan, there’s everything there but a Kraken!

R.I.P. Bob Clark

Bob Clark and his son were killed today in a car accident in California. Our sympathies go out to his family. He will be greatly missed.
The news story.

The Abandoned Screening No Longer Abandoned

Happy happy, joy joy: we’ve just confirmed that Montreal filmmaker Karim Hussain (Subconscious Cruelty, La Belle bête) will be joining us for the CineMacabre screening of The Abandoned! Hussain co-wrote the screenplay with director Nacho Cerdà, and co-presented it with him at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Come to the Bloor theatre (506 Bloor [...]

My Pet Monster

Our dog Godzilla made it into her first tattoo magazine. This was taken at the Montreal Tattoo Convention (when she was only 14 weeks!) and published in the newest issue of Skin&Ink.

This is Godzilla’s Gene Simmons tongue:

And in case you doubt her cuteness in any way, here’s another glamour shot:

I heart my stupid, squishfaced dog.
