Scratching My Skull
I was honoured to be invited to create a scratchboard illustration for a new hardcover art book that tattoo titan Guy Atchison and Michelle Wortman are creating – it’s all tattoo artists doing scratch art on black clayboard. Because I’m apprenticing under Bob Tyrrell, I qualified and was grateful for the opportunity, so I took it.
Guy and Michelle have assembled 100-plus amazingly talented artists from all over the world for this project, so I was a little nervous to be in such company - especially being that I haven’t done one of these since high school and I only started drawing again recently. This sucker took me around 8 hours (8X10). I used tattoo needles (curved 13 mag, 7 mag, 5 mag and a tight 5 round) an exacto knife and a scratchboard scraping tool to scratch it out.
It’s evidently going to be traveling with an art show before it gets published in the book, which is super cool.
Hope you like it. More art coming soon. I may even do another for the book since the deadline has been extended.

That is cool. Scratch art in general is amazing. I found some of the past entries here (scroll down): http://www.hyperspacestudios.com/scratchart.html
I dig that locust, and the detail on the one of the guy looking at the tower is amazing.
Wicked stuff!

Thanks D. Those are examples they found to send out, the actual submissions are pretty fucking amazing too. Tedious but fun stuff!

Great job JV. I haven’t done scratch board or needle point in years. It’s tedious as hell, but the results are worth it. Nicely done.
