China Gives Horror a Boost

The tagline on the above Chinese bootleg of Planet of the Apes says it all: “Where Rule is Broke!”
In its latest hilarious and misguided cultural crackdown, the Chinese government has declared war on horror movies, which, of course, will only make them more popular. For that I say thanks.
According to an article here, a government website states that “The horror, violence and cruelty portrayed are extremely harmful to the psychological development of children.”
The irony of one of the world’s most repressive and brutal regimes playing moral guardian is, of course, beyond delicious.
(Thanks to Sean for sending the link my way, and if you want to see more crappy Chinese bootleg DVD covers, go to the Flickr “Crappy Bootleg DVD covers” pool, here.)

Wait, the bootleg version of Planet of the Apes stars Traci Lords, Jeff Fahey, and Brian Bloom? That right there is some serious star power.
