HorrorBabble returns this week with a new installment in their FORGOTTEN WEIRD TALES reading series. This week: “The Ocean Ogre” by American author Dana Carroll, first appeared in Weird Tales Magazine in July 1937. I have a copy of the short story, “The Sea Thing” by Frank Belknap Long, which Carroll’s “The Ocean Ogre” is a nearly exact copy of, right down to the journal entry format. From what I can tell, only a few lines here or there have been added, and some of Long’s lines removed. But otherwise, the story and wording are nearly identical. I suspect the writer Dana Carroll did not actually exist, but was probably a name used by Weird Tales so they could publish this slightly altered story without owing any additional pay to Long. “The Sea Thing” was published in Weird Tales in 1925. “The Ocean Ogre” was also published in Weird Tales, but not until 1937. It’s a shame Rue Morgue didn’t decide to use Long’s version for this audio recording instead, as the true writer (Long) deserves recognition for having written this tale.
